Egyptian Attack on Free Speech and Social Science
On August 2, 2008, the Egyptian authorities launched a second attack on exiled Egyptian activist and scholar Saad Eddin Ibrahim, sentencing him (in absentia) to two years in prison for “tarnishing Egypt's reputation.” SSRC President Craig Calhoun says that by resuming their campaign against one of Egypt's most distinguished social scientists, Egyptian leaders “have sought to deprive Egyptian citizens of both democracy and scientific knowledge.”
